M11 - Wild Duck Cluster in Scutum | |||
The small constellation of Scutum is home to a remarkable bright open
cluster of stars. The rich and compact Wild Duck Cluster consists of
around 2,900 stars at a distance of 5,460 light years. The cluster, also
referred to as Messier 11, owes its name to the appearance of stars in
straight lines, resembling the pattern of wild ducks in flight. ì Click on the image to open a high resolution version.
This snapshot shows only part of the cluster, I intend to revisit this
object again in the future to complete the exposure. |
